Background


Khmer Association for Development (KAD) is a local Cambodian non-governmental organization that was founded in 1999 and started to operate its projects in the same year. KAD first registered with the Council of Minister on April 19, 1999 and registered again with the Ministry of Interior on November 02, 2004. KAD is located in Kien Svay district, Kandal province around 15km east of Phnom Penh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The purpose of KAD establishment was to participate with the government, both national and international organizations and Cambodian people in poverty reduction through implementing four missions including providing technical/human resources, community development programs, salvation to the vulnerable people and encouraging the human rights respect and democracy.

In the past, KAD received funds from Latter-Day Saints Charities, private donors, Australian Embassy, Women's International Group, Misereor and Open Society Institute to support the implementation of some projects including vocational training, self-help community, non-formal education, oral health care and education, library, humanitarian aid and community newspaper that focused on especially vulnerable people in Kien Svay district. Presently, we are implementing some projects such as oral health care and education, library, non-formal education, community newspaper, travel & tour agency just established to provide the services including worldwide air-ticket sales, visa arrangement & extension, hotel reservation, inbound/outbound tours, vehicle rental, boat ticket sales and document & cargo services.

Some projects such as vocational training and self-help group and humanitarian aid has just been terminated, so from now on, we are also seeking donors to continue them. In addition, KAD also received donations of medicines from HOPE WORLDWIDE and dental surgery equipments from DENTAID in UK.

In 2000, KAD was involved with the civil society to advocate for the land of ethnic minority grabbed by powerful business people in Kampong Thom province. In 2003, KAD was invited by WANGO to attend the conference on the code of ethics & conduct for NGOs in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2003, KAD participated with other civil society organizations to observe the national elections and monitor the violence both before and after the elections. In 2005, KAD attended the Asian civil society organization conference held in Malaysia on women, children, youth, human right, environment and economy.

In February 2007, KAD observed the processes of the 2nd mandate commune council elections and assisted the local election committees in publishing the polling stations, election information certificates, guidelines and orders of the national election committee and telling the people to go and see the election name lists and go to vote. In the end, KAD helped publishing the election results. Presently, KAD is the core member of NGO Good Practice Project of Cooperation Committee for Cambodia (CCC) in Cambodia. NGO GPP is one of the CCC projects. The goal of CCC and NGO GPP is to work with organizations that are committed to implementing the standards in the NGO Code for enhanced organizational accountability and good practice.
