It is not easy for Mut Mom to be present in the public and talk about HIV/AIDS prevention while she is living with HIV. After lifting the spirits and trained by KHANA organization in Phnom Penh. Mom decided to work as a community health educator in Battambang province. Her work requires her to enter Karaok parlors, brothels and communities provided sex workers as well as villagers with education both directly and indirectly on the spread and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
In December 2006, Mo had unusual health after working as Karaok girl and as sex worker indirectly for 8 years. With support from one of local NGOs, Mom took her blood test and then found herself having HIV.
Mom, 33, said “ if there isn’t anti-opportunistic disease and anti-HIV medicine, I am not sure I can live until now. She added that “before taking blood test, I had no energy when abnormal spots appeared all over the body. After taking anti-opportunistic disease and anti-HIV medicine, now I have better health and usual feeling”. Through her work since July 2007 Mom has met and educated almost 600 people and now “ I am living with HIV; I don’t want anybody like me”. That’s why I decided to participate in society to prevent HIV epidemics.
For Mom, she really wants to share experience taking place to other people, which can make them live long life and work as usual. She said “ I would like to insist on all sex workers to take blood test to find out about the result and if positive, they can live a long life through proper health care with support from health service providers and medical practitioners. At this time, I would like all sex workers and their clients as well as other people to use condoms when having sex in order to stop the spread of HIV and various STD. (By Chhay Sophal)
