Three Opposition Parties Organized Press Conference to Reject National Election Results in the 4th Mandate.

Phnom Penh: On August 8, 2008, Sam Raingsy Party (SRP) cooperated with Human Right (HRP) and Norodom Ranarith Parties (NRP) to organize a press conference at central office of SRP in Phnom Penh to deny the election results announced by National Election Committee (NEC) on August 9, 2008

Three parties hadn’t absolutely accredited the results of 27 July 2008 national elections because NEC prejudiced the ruling party. The three parties were united to demand re-election or further elections would be organized for people who missed the elections and demanded NEC to take any proper action to solve the three parties’ legal proceedings, SRP president Mr. Sam Raingsy said, adding that the three parties represented 2,018,000 people who didn’t go for elections. On behalf of the three parties, Mr. Sam Raingsy demanded the respect for people’s rights and democracy. He said democracy doesn’t depend only on leadership of the majority, democracy requires the respect for the rights of minority.

A representative of HRP Mr. Kieth Sokun said HRP has adhered to its stance since the election results were initially announced and provisional results were full of injustice and fraud. HRP respects human rights and democracy. He said “ we don’t allow more than 2 millions of people to suffer from injustice, so HRP must be involved in doing joint activities with the three parties and must keep to a common stance to resolve ever problem related to elections leading to resolution to other major national issues.

NRP counteracted not only after elections, but we counteracted a long time. We opposed the meetings with NEC under coordination of UNDP. NRP opposed the removal of more than 650,000 names of voters from election lists, increases of name lists of voters and various techniques used by NEC to cater for Cambodian People Party (CPP), a spokesman and representative of NRP Mr. Muth Chantha said, adding that July 26, 2008, several hundred thousands of people wanted to vote, but they didn’t see their names on election lists. People complained that they have 5 members in their families, but 4 of 5 members were removed from the election lists. So NRP couldn’t recognize official results announced by NEC.
